The City of Winchester Trust’s archive includes photographs of Winchester from the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition takes some of these photos and compares them with a local photographer’s photos of the same view today.
If you live or work in Winchester you become so familiar with it that you may hardly notice the changes, unless, of course, the change is dramatic. In fact, the city is constantly changing, and the City of Winchester Trust has a photographic archive to prove it!
We have selected a number of photographs from our archive, taken at different times during the 19th and 20th centuries, and then photographed the same views today. The comparison certainly produces surprises!
Most of the views are of the historic central area, and even this area has seen many changes, some good, some not so good.
Local photographer Javaid Akhtar has had a fascinating time, first of all identifying the view, and then attempting to line up a shot from the same position. Come to our gallery, at the Heritage Centre in Upper Brook Street, and see the results.
