Bicentennial Celebration Event

  • The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre Old Town Hall, 56 East Street Havant, PO9 1BS United Kingdom (map)

200 years ago, 8th September 1824, the first bridge between Langstone & Hayling Island was opened. This illustrated presentation will discuss the reasons behind the building of a bridge, and outline the construction of the first and 1956 replacement.

Until 1824 anyone wishing to visit or leave Hayling Island either had to find a boat or to use the Wadeway, a shallow route that gave a muddy walk, at low tide, across Langstone harbour. However, the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal, completed in 1823, cut the Wadeway, necessitating a new solution. This was the weight limited road bridge replaced in 1956 by the present crossing.
