Sandham Memorial Chapel Fete

  • Sandham Memorial Chapel Harts Lane Burghclere, Newbury, RG20 9JT United Kingdom (map)

Home to an epic series of large-scale murals by the acclaimed artist Stanley Spencer created to honour the ‘forgotten dead' of the First World War.

For 2024 Heritage Open Days we are running a Fete style event in the garden with a tombola, children's craft, pop up tea and coffee tent and other activities for everyone to enjoy. It is also a great opportunity to explore Stanley Spencer's Chapel. This modest red-brick building tucked away in the Hampshire village of Burghclere houses an amazing series of paintings inspired by Stanley Spencer's own experiences at the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol and on the Salonika front during the First World War. It is peppered with personal and unexpected details and shows everyday activities rather than the horrors of war.

The site includes an orchard, a Garden of Reflection and picnic tables.
