Making a Grade 2 listed 1680s town house greener

  • 12 St Swithun Street Winchester, SO23 9JP United Kingdom (map)

Tour of the house shows what has been done to make it more energy-efficient, covering materials, trades, cost, listed building consent & hassles. New in 2024: hemp and plaster internal insulation of rooms under roof and external wall; heat pump.

See: solar panels hidden on valley roof, and battery storage. Conservatory with triple glazing. Double secondary magnetic glazing to old windows. Underfloor insulation on ground floor - two types: recycled newspaper in one, multi-foil sheeting in the other. Before the open days, we intend to have the air source heat pump installed along with an electric hob, enabling us to stop using gas altogether.

In addition to extensive insulation and energy reduction works, we also repointed the rear flint wall (which was part of the city south wall).

The owners will start tours on the hour. The architect who specified the works needed and the specialist lime plasterer hope to be on site for some of the time to answer questions.

We hope this will be of interest to people who are wondering what they can do to their own homes, as well as people interested in old houses.
