Heritage Open Days 2017

Last year there were over 40

2016 was our most successful year to date, not only were there over 40 events but they were amazing. This year we are hoping for more than 50, and we are well on our way to achieving this with 13 already registered. We know many other event organisers are in the midst of completing their entries, and so by the end of this month we envisage our events page will go live. So exciting!

If you are hoping to open your building or run an event, don’t forget that our local deadline for registration is the same as the early bird registration – 1st May. If you register by this date we can make sure we are able to promote your event in our printed programme. So if you haven’t yet started your entry make sure you do soon! Click here to find out what is involved.

It isn’t just number of events that we count though. We are also always looking for new and more diverse ways of celebrating our cultural heritage, and this year the national team have helped us by identifying some great themes. They are:

LGBTQ Heritage

2017 is the 50th anniversary of the partial de-criminalisation of homosexuality. This is our chance to open places and tell stories that may have been side-lined or silenced. We are also hoping it might be a unique opportunity for us to work with partner organisations. If you are part of a Winchester based group or organisation that is marking the anniversary this year, please do get in touch.

50th Anniversary of Conservation Areas

This year also sees half a century since the advent of conservation areas. Very relevant to us in Winchester! Do you live in one? Could you reveal the past and present of that area or perhaps be prepared to open up a conversation about what conservation means to people today? If you could then again get in touch with us as we’d love to hear from you.

Heritage and Nature

And the final one is the European Heritage Days theme, which is being adopted in many countries around Europe this September. It’s a chance to open a green space (park, nature reserve, woodland…anything!) or natural feature (highlight a river, lake, hill). If you know one near you and you are up for revealing the history of that space or even better animate it with activity, then you know what to do. Get in touch with us.
